Its enough to scare the crap out of ya, your working the front loader, turn to back up and theres that awful noise dragging the Box Scraper on the ground. I raise it up, just to watch it slowly lower again !!!

Argh,
New Pump was installed by me in about 1 hour, after that all the hydraulics were VERY responsive. This problem was around even before I changed the pump, but I was hopeing to kill two birds with one stone. My shop manual IS on its way to me, but I wanted to post here since you all helped me so much with the last problem.

Thanks
Jerod

Jerod -

I do not recall the model of tractor that you have, however here are some areas to look at: 1) Many times the incorrect hydraulic fluid gets introduced into a system. Whether by cost or incorrect knowledge. It typically is inherent to the incorrect viscosity(thickness) of the oil. In your case, if an oil too thin was put in, then the hydraulic pump gears would essentially be spinning with little to no output, or displacement to create output hydraulic pressure. 2) If your system, for what ever reason had an air bubble in it yet after you changed the pump out, that air bubble may have worked its way to the pump causing the pump to cavitate (spin free without fluid displacement). If this was the case, consequently, without displacement of fluid, little to no presuure would build in system, and your implements would not stay lifted. This problem of air in system could have happened if your breather was fouled or plugged, causing the air to remain trapped in system. 3) Does your tractor have a flow control valve? It typically would be located in or around the underside of the seat area. Many tractors used to have this valve to limit the amount of fluid / pressure to the 3pt, to accentuate the pressure / operations of the loader. Check to see that the flow control valve is not contaminated with something that would keep it from allowing full hydraulic flow to the 3pt system.

If I recall, this originally was a two part question. The engine oil was spewing and the hydraulics quite after a short time. Happy that one problem is solved.

The first thing I'd do is change the hydraulic oil and filter. A new filter can work wonders. If that doesn't clear up the problem, I'd check the hydraulic oil dip stick after it's ran for awhile to see if the oil is foamy. Normally air in the hydraulics system is pushed through to the sump where it bubbles out before being pumped again. Obstructed suction-lines (the filter for example) or broken suction lines can introduce more air into the air than will bubble out and result in what Willie describes and a tractor shouldn't run for too long in this condition.

I don't know if the tractor has a position control 3ph or not. However, from the description I suspect that it doesn't. Most position control 3ph's that are bypassing oil while in neutral will cycle up and down when the tractor is running. Most flow control valves on position hitches affect the rate of lowering and don't affect the rate of lift and that may be the case here too. However, I would close the flow control down until the scraper doesn't crash to the ground when the 3ph is in lower mode. If the box is very heavy for the tractor and the flow control is wide open, lowering could be causing oil cavitation in the lift cylinder.

The problem could be an out of adjustment 3ph and the service manual should give adjustment procedures. Other than adjustment and filter, there is the possibility of various bad hydraulic valves and seals. If the tractor has a loader and that is working normally, the problem probably is one of these valves or seals rather than the pump. Fortunately the valves and seals aren't too big a repair deal.

Under the seat on the right hand side there is a lever which controls the rear. I am understanding that if the lever is pulled all the way back (lifting the scraper up) and holding it there leaves the hydraulics in an open cycle, so I puch the lever ahead some but then it just slowly lowers all the way down, I didnt change the hydraulic filter but will try that ! I will also try to adjust it once the book gets here, Tractor parts says 2 weeks for delivery.

Thanks

It sounds like we're all on the same page with your difficulties, Jerod. By combatting the pump, now we know that you should have sufficient pressures to work with. More than likely, where the present difficulty lies is either an out-of-adjustment on the positioning valve stop causing an internal bypass, or the seals are kaput in the valve assembly itself. This is not a big job to replace, by no-means. I do not know what you have on order as far as "the book" is concerned, however, if you really want to become dangerous, knowledgable that is, on your orange, I happened to see that on ebay there are several big service manuals presently available for your model. That was not a plug for ebay, nor were they my books, just an FYI.
In any event, it sounds like you are nearing the end of your situations. I'm sure we'll all stay tuned !

Thanks, WillieH. Your pointer to the books on Ebay will certainly help me. I am a very newbie and just bought orange - L3130. ....
